Tracy Harrison joined us for our Navigating the New Normal: COVID and Autoimmunity Summit. She presented on Through the Looking Glass: Practitioner Learning from the Mirror of COVID.

Tracy, founder of The School of Applied Functional Medicine, opened the presentation stating that if someone is already chronically challenged with increased inflammation and stress, they will be more vulnerable to infectious diseases. She asked the question, "What are we doing to stop the cycle of vulnerability and effectively prevent the root causes?  During this webinar, she discusses some ways we can prevent pandemics from becoming so disruptive.

Tracy covered some common patterns of Immune Dysregulation in COVID-19 including:

  1. Sluggish innate immune function
  2. Out of control inflammation
  3. Insufficient T-regulatory cells
  4. Immuno-deficiency
  5. Loss of internal inflammation management

Tracy emphasized that all things are interconnected. Humans are not designed to be stressed, infected, malnourished, and unrested. Many people want to have high vitality lives, but life choices are creating a sympathetic nervous system state.

Dis-ease vs. Disease

From a conventional health care lens, Tracy said practitioners are generally waiting for something to become severe enough to merit attention. However, she feels practitioners need to look upstream and start being proactive in preventive patient practices. When practitioners know better, they can do better.

She highlighted the importance of engaging early on in taking a close look proactively at both lifestyle choices and circumstances. Tracy reminds practitioners to ask the question of "How can we engage with people to build stronger more resilient health?" Tracy emphasized that all things are interconnected. Humans are not designed to be stressed, infected, malnourished, and unrested. Many people want to have high vitality lives, but life choices are creating a sympathetic nervous system state.
